From conference registrar to financial steward, CPE’s David Mitchell retires after 36 years
December 5, 2024
When David Mitchell first walked into the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center in 1988, little did he know he was beginning a remarkable 3½-decade journey with Continuing and Professional Education.
From pioneering computer use in conference management to becoming a trusted financial steward, Mitchell’s career is a testament to adaptability, commitment, and the profound impact of dedicated professionals in continuing education.
Starting as a part-time assistant, Mitchell was among the early adopters of computer technology in conference management, helping to coordinate the Virginia Tech Tax Conference during a time of significant technological transition. This marked the beginning of a career that would span multiple locations, leadership changes, and technological evolutions.
Throughout the years, his role transformed from supporting program registrations to becoming a critical member of the finance team, where he became instrumental in ensuring financial accuracy and procedural compliance. As the primary depositor of funds, he has worked meticulously with the Bursar’s Office, managing pre-deposits, reconciling month-end reports, and handling financial documentation for various programs. His role has also required him to work with building representatives — maintenance and landlord — and emergency management.
But what he has loved most are the people he’s worked with.
“Engagement and CPE have some of the most talented, caring, supportive, and encouraging folks I have ever worked with,” he said. “The roles themselves have evolved as technology has advanced and changed, as well as leadership, but the current leaders and workplace environment have been particularly meaningful — especially during challenging personal times when the team provided unwavering support.”
As Mitchell prepares for retirement on Jan. 1, 2025 (with his last day in the office being Dec. 23), he is looking forward to a new chapter. His retirement plans include cleaning out his home, traveling, dedicating more time to playing piano for church and personal enjoyment, spending time with his dog, Lenny, returning to volunteer at the Montgomery County Animal Care and Adoption Center, and simply enjoying nature and catching up on reading.
Shelly Jobst, director of Continuing and Professional Education, said Mitchell’s dedication, attention-to-detail, and commitment to accuracy have been invaluable.
“David has been a loyal and trusted member of the CPE team, contributing his talents to both the registration and finance teams with unwavering dedication. His meticulous attention to detail, consistent work ethic, and heartfelt care for CPE’s mission have been cornerstones of our success,” she said. “While we will deeply miss David’s expertise and warm presence, we are delighted to wish him a continuous week of Saturdays through a well-deserved retirement.
“David, thank you for your legacy of excellence — you’ve left an indelible mark on all of us.”
