Who We Are
Guru Ghosh is the Vice President for Outreach and International Affairs (OIA) at Virginia Tech. The Vice President is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight on statewide and global engagement initiatives. He earned his Ph.D. from the College of William and Mary in Educational Policy, Planning and Leadership. His research focuses on education in the colonial world and on British secret-service operations in South Asia during World War II.
General Manager, The Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center
As general manager, Tom Cupo is responsible for all property operations. In addition to the Inn at Virginia Tech, Cupo is responsible for overseeing the university’s Pete Dye River Course and providing guidance and direction for the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center. Cupo has held leadership positions in Benchmark’s operations and senior management departments for more than two decades. He is a certified real property administrator and facilities management administrator, designations he earned from the Building Owners and Managers Institute of Arnold, Maryland.
Director, Outreach Information Services
Scott Farmer is chief information officer, leading Outreach Information Services since its creation in 2001. He started at Virginia Tech in 1996 as an economic development specialist focusing on technology. His Ph.D. is in instructional systems development.
Associate Vice President for International Affairs
Don Hempson plays a key role expanding the university’s presence around the world. He oversees an international portfolio that includes Virginia Tech's study abroad programs in the Global Education Office, the Language and Culture Institute, International Support Services, the Center for International Research, Education, and Development, and working with the university’s centers in Valdivia, Chile; and Chennai, India. Trained in industrial engineering, Hempson veered from that career path to earn graduate degrees in history. His Ph.D. is in international history – diplomatic and business affairs. Hempson comes to Virginia Tech from Ohio State, where he led the university’s "global gateways" initiatives.
Associate Vice President for Engagement
Susan Short is responsible for advancing Virginia Tech's national leadership position in the areas of outreach and engagement. Closely involved with communities, colleges, and centers to identify engagement opportunities for youth, students, scholars, practicing professional, and community members. Provides leadership for the Commonwealth Campus Centers, Continuing and Professional Education, Center for Organizational and Technological Advancement, Office of Economic Development, and Upward Bound/Talent Search. She came to Virginia Tech as the director of the Virginia Tech Roanoke Center in 2004. Her Ph.D. is in junior and community college education.
Assistant Vice President, Resource Management and Planning
Jane Swan is responsible for administration of financial and human resources for the diverse Outreach and International Affairs portfolio of organizations, and a wide range of special projects. Her Ph.D. is in international business.

Rich Mathieson leads an integrated, digitally driven communications strategy that highlights Virginia Tech's efforts to be fully engaged with society, here and around the world.
