ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Connecting bright young talent with employers through internships and work-based learning is the goal for the Region 2 internship collaborative at the Virginia Tech Center for Economic and Community Engagement.

“They’re all bridges that connect academic learning and real world application. So, we have students that can gain hands-on experience with employers that are either local or are just in that industry they’re interested in,” says Region 2 Internship Collaborative Program Coordinator Brenna Valle.

The Region 2 Internship Collaborative is hosting the LYH Intern Connect event Wednesday in Lynchburg to bring together employers and students.

“Students are able to take advantage of both a social aspect -- like we’ll have areas for them to have a more casual interactions so they can benefit from networking opportunities, but also just build bonds with definitely local areas where they can expand their talent,” says Valle.

She says areas with the most opportunities right now-- manufacturing, health care and small businesses.

It’s open to Virginia students, but especially those at local schools, including:

Central Virginia Community College

Liberty University

Randolph College

Sweet Briar College

University of Lynchburg.

Organizers say there will be between 20 and 30 local employers taking part at Wednesday’s event.

The LYH Intern Connect event is happening from 4:30 pm until 7:00 pm. It’s at the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance, and is free for students and employers.
