Inspired by her own experience as a TRIO alumn, LeShawn Kee brings a personal commitment to helping students pursue their goals as the newest member of TRIO Programs’ Upward Bound team.

As a student at Virginia State University, Kee participated in the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program, a federally funded TRIO program designed to prepare first-generation, income-eligible, and underrepresented students for graduate education and research careers. She later attended Regent University for graduate school.

“The McNair Scholars Program made a lasting impact on me, even to this day,” Kee said. “I wanted to do what I could to pay it forward and support current students.”

In her new role, Kee will work with students from Patrick Henry, William Fleming, and Forest Park Academy high schools, helping them explore educational and career opportunities and prepare for life after graduation.

With experience in education and a heart for mentoring young people, Kee said she is excited to join the TRIO/Upward Bound team and help students build confidence.

“I have a heart for young people and want to do all I can to help them succeed,” she said.

Outside of work, Kee enjoys exploring Blacksburg, trying new foods, and dancing.
