Laura Luo brings global perspective to study abroad systems and student success

Although most students may never meet Laura Luo, the study abroad application and systems coordinator with the Global Education Office, her work affects nearly every student the office serves. Luo helps manage the systems students use to explore and apply for study abroad programs.

“One of the best things about joining such a student-centered team is knowing that, by improving workflows and making processes easier, I will be helping more students engage and thrive globally,” Luo said.

Supporting students has been a consistent theme throughout Luo’s career.

Before joining Virginia Tech, she taught second grade and high school and advised student organizations in both China and the United States. Those roles gave her experience supporting student success across a variety of educational and cultural settings.

Joining the Global Education Office is, in a way, a full-circle moment for Luo. In college, she studied abroad as an exchange student in Taiwan and participated in a summer program in Israel. She understands the passion for intercultural exchange and exploration that many students bring home from studying abroad. Since college, she has continued to travel internationally.

Among her most memorable experiences was a visit to the Dead Sea.

“I would highly recommend that colleagues visit the Dead Sea, especially in July,” she said with a laugh. “When you jump into the water, you’ll immediately understand where the name comes from. It’s dead hot!”

Her travels have also made her an adventurous eater. While visiting Puebla, Mexico, she tried garlic-fried insects.

“They may look a little intimidating, but they’re surprisingly delicious and packed with protein,” she said. “I’d happily eat them again.”

Outside of work, Luo enjoys hiking, cycling, reading, writing, shopping, and participating in small groups. Occasionally, she said, she enjoys doing “absolutely nothing at all.”

She also appreciates life’s small pleasures: a blooming flower, a bird wandering across a sidewalk, a smile from a stranger, a delicious spicy snack, or sunlight filtering through leaves.

“Little moments like these remind me that every day is a wonderful day to be alive,” she said.

As she settles into her new role, Luo is eager to advance the Global Education Office’s mission and create a smoother, more accessible experience for students pursuing international opportunities. Her background as an educator, advisor, traveler, and student advocate brings a valuable perspective to the team and a commitment to expanding global engagement at Virginia Tech.
