Haunted thrills and starlit skies mark LCI Halloween adventure

Helping international students acclimate to life in the United States often means going beyond the classroom — and sometimes, into the dark.
As part of a cultural immersion trip, 18 students from China at Virginia Tech’s Language and Culture Institute got a firsthand look at one of America’s favorite fall traditions — Halloween. What began as a lighthearted field trip soon turned into a night of thrills and chills.
Led by instructor Becky Etzler, the students started the excursion in a uniquely American way — gathering at a Spirit Halloween store to check out the impressive store displays.
“They have some amazing product displays,” Etzler said. “This year, huge animatronic decorations haunt a full-size subway car.”
From there, the group ventured to the Hexed Haunted Attraction in Elliston, where a creepy corn maze and a series of haunted farm buildings awaited. Actors bedecked in terrifying costumes and makeup ensured the students met a jump-scare or bone-chilling scene around every corner.
“The entire experience was thrilling and exciting, with a strong sense of interaction and immersion,” said LCI student Xinyang (Timmy) Cui.
After the adrenaline subsided, the group found a quiet country road to end the night with stargazing under the clear rural sky — a rare sight for students who come from large cities.
“I like to do group experiences, like the three on this trip, that showcase American culture, give them something fun to do, and show off the beautiful natural areas surrounding Virginia Tech,” Etzler said.
