Vice President John Dooley highlights the University's commitment to involve faculty in the community. He applauds the faculty's track record of engaging the community and urges them to do so more and more. He considers it the pleasant responsibility for Virginia Tech to connect with and improve the community. Since the 1980s when it was founded, the Blacksburg Farmer's Market has changed tremendously. Kathryn Albright, associate professor for the School of Architecture and Design, has assisted many of these changes. The nonprofit organization Friends of the Farmers Market was formed in 1998, and since 2004 plans for the market facility to be reconstructed and expanded have been pursued. Kathryn Albright, Elizabeth Vogel, and others closely connected with the Blacksburg Farmer's Market discuss the long road to this expansion and the pleasure it has brought.

Virginia Tech graduate students enrolled in the urban affairs and planning program under the College of Architecture and Urban design recently assisted the Town of Floyd with a plan to revitalize their economy. The goal was to figure out how they could create good employment opportunities inside the county by enhancing or utilizing what resources currently exist. The end result was four different "green" options. Community members and local officials were pleased and interested in exploring the possibilities.
