Guru Ghosh is the Vice President of Outreach and International Affairs (OIA) at Virginia Tech. The Vice President is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight on statewide and global engagement initiatives. He earned his Ph.D. from the College of William and Mary in Educational Policy, Planning and Leadership. His research focuses on education in the colonial world and on British secret-service operations in South Asia during World War II.
Associate Vice President for International Affairs
Karl Markgraf provides leadership to the offices of Global Education; International Support Services; International Research, Education, and Development; the Steger Center for International Scholarship in Switzerland, and the development and sustainability of new international sites in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia. He earned his Ph.D. in German language and literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and has served both as university administrator as faculty member in German. He joined Virginia Tech in 2015, bringing over 20 years’ experience in the field of international education administration.
Associate Vice President for Engagement
Susan Short is responsible for advancing Virginia Tech's national leadership position in the areas of outreach and engagement. Closely involved with communities, colleges, and centers to identify engagement opportunities for youth, students, scholars, practicing professional, and community members. Provides leadership for the Commonwealth Campus Centers, Continuing and Professional Education, Center for Organizational and Technological Advancement, Language and Culture Institute, Office of Economic Development, and Upward Bound/Talent Search. She came to Virginia Tech as the director of the Virginia Tech Roanoke Center in 2004. Her Ph.D. is in junior and community college education.
Director of Communications
Andrea Brunais is director of communications, providing creative oversight to eight other OIA communicators. She is also the creator and executive producer of Save Our Towns, the internet series focused on small-town Appalachia. A former award-winning journalist, her career included editorial positions with Media General, Creative Loafing and Knight Ridder newspapers. She has been in higher-education communications for more than 10 years. Her degree in mass communications and political science is from the University of South Florida.
Scott Farmer is chief information officer, leading Outreach Information Services since its creation in 2001. He started at Virginia Tech in 1996 as an economic development specialist focusing on technology. His Ph.D. is in instructional systems development.
General Manager, The Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center
As General Manager, Tom Shaver is responsible for all property operations. He has over thirty-five years of experience in the hospitality field and carries the Certified Hotel Administrator designation from the American Hotel & Lodging Association. He served most recently as Director of Lodging Operations for Callaway Gardens Resort in Pine Mountain, GA. He has managed hotel and conference centers in nine states and was owner/operator of a restaurant and banquet facility in Fayetteville, Georgia.
Director, Finance & Administration
Jane Swan is responsible for administration of financial and human resources for the diverse Outreach and International Affairs portfolio of organizations, and a wide range of special projects. Her Ph.D. is in international business.
